Full Installation Instructions for Desktop Lifejacket

Desktop Lifejacket has been developed using MS Visual Studio Express for C# and tested on MS-Windows 7 Operating System. The software should be compatible for other MS Windows versions but this has not been tested. Using an installer as shown here any missing components that Desktop Lifejacket needs, such as the correct version of MS-Windows .NET Framework will also be installed.

As I am an individual with little time to do things properly(!) the installation process has not been optimised and as a result there are a number of warning messages that appear as you install the software. Don’t be alarmed as these appear to inform the user that this software has not been produced by a recognised publisher or by standard procedures.

Where I work, the executable (program) is simply placed on a shared drive and all users access it by the shortcut placed in their ‘Startup’ folder within the ‘All Programs’ area of the desktop. This seems to work fine for a large group of people where people are familiar working with computers. However this is not the case in general and so a simple installation set up has been produced.

The installation steps are divided below as follows..

·         Running the installer

·         Desktop Lifejacket running

·         Placing the shortcut to Desktop Lifejacket into the Startup folder

This is the link to install Desktop Lifejacket but it is first recommended to read the relevant sections below. The installer link is repeated at the bottom of this page.

Running the installer

Above (and below) is a link to the installation web page and following the link will show a link to setup.exe. On clicking this link the browser will produce a waning message as shown below (just ignore the parenthesis (1) in the file name as the screen shots were taken on the second time I’d installed the code)..

If you are using Chrome the operating system will include a security warring about opening the installer…

Again, it is the ‘Run’ button that needs to be selected, not the default selection of cancel shown above.

Finally the operating system issues a warning about running the installer…

Guess which button you press here? The Desktop Lifejacket should start running on successful installation.

A more detailed description of the items shown on this form can be found on the main web page of the Desktop Lifejacket site. However before visiting that page it is necessary to perform one more step to complete the installation.

Placing the shortcut to Desktop Lifejacket into the Startup folder

The Desktop Lifejacket should ideally be almost invisible to the user; running in the background and only becoming visible when it discovers that the computer has been used continuously for the specified time without a significant break. In order to have minimum user overhead to enable this it is recommended that the shortcut to the Desktop Lifejacket is placed in the users’ ‘Startup’ folder so that the user need not have the burden of starting the program every time they log on.

The installer placed a shortcut to the Desktop Lifejacket on the desktop background and it is necessary to place this in the users’ ‘Startup’ folder. This can be done by either opening the ‘Startup’ folder and dragging the shortcut into it or by directly dragging the shortcut to the folder without opening it.

Opening the Startup folder

To open the Startup folder simply navigate from the ‘Start’ icon in the bottom left of your screen to ‘All Programs’ and select the ‘Startup’ folder. Then, from the context menu displayed by clicking the right-mouse button, select ‘Open’ as shown below.

OpenStartup

This then opens an Explorer window in which the Desktop Lifejacket shortcut placed on the users’ desktop background can now be dragged into.

Dragging the shortcut directly to the Startup folder

As an alternative to the above approach it is necessary to click on the Desktop Lifejacket shortcut placed on the users’ desktop background and drag it to the ‘Start’ icon in the bottom left of your screen. Keeping your finger on the mouse button, wait until the menu is presented and then drag the shortcut over that menu is visible. It then may be necessary to drag the shortcut over the slider bar until the ‘Startup’ folder is visible and drag the shortcut over that until the folder opens. The last step is to drop (release mouse button) the shortcut in this folder.

Drag Shortcut to ‘Start’

Save Shortcut in ‘Startup’ folder

DragShortCutToStartClip

SaveInStartupFolderClip

The shortcut on the desktop background can now be deleted.

Uninstall Desktop Lifejacket

Note that whenever Desktop Lifejacket is uninstalled that it will be necessary to delete the shortcut placed in the ‘Startup’ folder…

DeleteFromStartupFolderClip

In order to uninstall Desktop Lifejacket it is necessary to navigate ‘Start’ -> ‘Control Panel’ -> ‘uninstall a Program’ and select the application for removal.

Finally, please follow this link to install Desktop Lifejacket.
